Sean Penn’s Book Bob Honey Reshapes the Dystopian Novel

The following two articles on Sean Penn’s novel, “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff” introduce and talk about the novel in different ways. In one article, the author gives his analysis of the project. In the other article, the book is more of a reference.

The May 24, 2018 article titled Sean Penn’s Dystopian Novel Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff is a book review. The author talks specifically of how Sean Penn incorporates his own experiences and beliefs into characters and experiences in the work. He also goes to show how Mr. Penn strategically eases his personal views on major social issues into the novel. The most obvious example of this is the main character, Bob Honey himself. The author goes to point out that Bob Honey and Mr. Penn share a great deal of similarities, specifically their passion for human rights. He compared Bob Honey’s disaster relief efforts in Iraq and the United States to that of Mr. Penn in his relief efforts in Haiti after the damaging hurricane in 2010 and the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. To pull it all together to prove the point of similarity, the author refers to a character in the book named Fletcher being based on El Chapo, the Mexican kingpin Mr. Penn interviewed. The author explains the different writing methods used throughout the book, and warns the reader of how words, thoughts and ideas in the world today will challenge and support your very own via this novel.

The April 6, 2018 Vogue interview titled, Sean Penn on Quitting the Movie Business, His New First Novel, and #MeToo is a little more personal and more direct, considering the answers are coming straight from the horse’s mouth. The article starts off with talking about his notorious interactions, and introduces “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff“. We learn more about Sean Penn, noticing that “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff” is a mere link to finding out what Mr. Penn’s future plans are in writing and film, his book tour, and Mr. Penn’s views on the #MeToo movement. This article is about the man. The book was the project to lead the interview to speaking about himself.

These articles dissect the same project. One speaks solely on the work. The other speaks on the work also, but more on the man and the ideas behind the it.

Alex Pall Struggles to Maintain Relevance with Chainsmokers’ New Direction

According to Alex Pall, one half of the hit EDM duo the Chainsmokers, what makes them better artists is that they strive to become better artists. Pall, a New York based DJ, formed the Chainsmokers with Andrew Taggart back in 2012. Despite their mainstream success the group is still fairly new, their breakout single “#Selfie” debuting back in 2014. In the four years since the group has charted many songs, and has also pushed the boundaries of EDM. Where most DJ’s are content to stay behind a booth, and mix synthscapes out of other artists’ work, the Chainsmokers like to create their own. Both Pall and Taggart are very active in the songwriting of their music, contributing in part or in whole to most of their songs. Taggart also began providing lead vocals for their songs with the release of “Closer”, which charted in 2016. An EDM DJ singing to their music like a concert is hitherto unheard of, but for the Chainsmokers it is about discovering their identity.

According to Pall the music communicates deeply to their listeners, and the group’s main goal is to increase that communication. They want their music to make a statement, to stay interesting, and to keep their audience engaged. Pall calls it a constant discussion about identity, preference, and where they are going. Neither Pall nor Taggart every expected to get as big as they are, and their quest for relevance sees them trying new things. They definitely do not want to be that group whose music sounds like another groups, or worse become considered a rip off of themselves. To avoid that the duo constantly works, constantly pushes, gets together every day, and strives to find their identity. It is this hard work that Pall believes makes them better artists.

The duo’s latest single “Sick Boy” is already making waves, with many commenting on how it is darker than all their other work. The song is the first of a series that explores the darker side of culture. For Pall and Taggart is another step on the road to identity.

The Chainsmokers’ Key Achievements in 2018

At the start of the Billboard Music awards, famous singer and voice coach Kelly Clarkson opened up with a speech about the school shooting that recently happened in Texas. The school shooting left ten victims dead and another ten injured. Kelly opened up the awards with tears in her eyes and in her speech she said, “I’m so sick of moments of silence — why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening?” The school wanted her to do a moment of silence but she insisted that she wanted a moment of change because we have had so many moment of silences, and it is time to take action.

Later on in the show The Chainsmokers along with singer, Halsey honored the late artist Avicii at the awards. Avicii was a big inspiration to the chainsmokers and so before they awarded the song “Despacito” they payed tribute to their late friend. Andrew and Alex said, “an artist who inspired so many in so many ways and meant so much to us and the EDM community.” and Halsey joined in and added that Avicii was a treasure to the music industry, and she went on to tell listeners that Avicii’s death should be an eye opener for others with family members or loved ones with mental health problems. She added the awareness of supporting loved ones who suffer with mental illness because unfortunately, Avicii took his own life back in April, and his death saddened the lives of millions.

The chainsmokers won an awards and dedicated it to Avicii. They stated that Avicii is the reason they were able to believe in their dreams, and that they hoped he found peace where he was at.

The Academy of Art University Created the AR App Tenderfeels to Make San Francisco More Beautiful

The Academy of Art University is working to make the world more beautiful. The Academy competed in a recent event sponsored by Tech in the Tenderloin in conjunction with the San Francisco Salvation Army Kroc Center. Four Academy students presented Tenderfeels, an app utilizing augmented reality, to the Chief Innovation Officer of the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation.

If adopted, Tenderfeels will help make the vibrant but economically challenged Tenderloin neighborhood safer for the approximately 25,000 people who live in the quarter-square-mile location. While historically rich, dynamic, and centrally located, the Tenderloin experiences one of the highest rates of crime and poverty in the city.

The Academy of Art University School of Game Development competed against students from schools such as University of California Berkeley, Penn State, and Standford Universities. The idea: to employ augmented or virtual reality (AR/VR) to discover community and social-focused solutions customized for the unique Tenderloin neighborhood.

Augmented reality uses graphics, sounds, and tactile feedback, and these data points are joined into the natural world. AR creates a fusion with the existing natural setting and then interposes virtual data on top of that information. The Tenderfeels app allows people to communicate in real time by collecting information contributed by Tenderloin residents as they interact with their environment. The goal: empowering people and organizations implementing solutions.
